Four months ago the staff of a north London care home didn't hold out much hope that their oldest resident would be with them for much longer - after all, Angela Hutor was 106 and suffering from Covid-19. But Angela made it through, becoming officially the oldest person in Britain to have beaten Covid, and earlier this month St Anne's in Stoke Newington laid on a special high tea party to celebrate her 107th birthday. But the coronavirus poses a threat not just to its residents, but also to the financial viability of the care home itself, which is appealing for urgent help from the local community.

A new report from Sustain and London Food Link, funded by Trust for London, looks at how services that ensure older adults can access meals in their homes are run, both before the Covid-19 pandemic and during it, across London. In the capital, adequate provision of meals on wheels services were not in place prior to lockdown. Where these exist, many face the possibility of being cut, annually. New, innovative services were being established in a few locations even before Covid-19, demonstrating that viable, affordable and effective solutions exist that could improve lives for thousands of older and disabled adults. During the lockdown, many innovative community solutions arose, which show great promise for the future if they are supported and funded.

Citizens Advice Enfield's two rather smart charity shops in Palmers Green are back - both in Green Lanes, one on the corner of Park Avenue, the other just south of the North Circ. However, for CAB Enfield's volunteer advisors the lockdown has not meant a break in their work - if anything, the reverse. Four weeks ago Barry and June Smitherman put out an urgent appeal for donations to help cover the cost of feeding and caring for the animals looked after by the Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) at the Trent Park Animal Centre. With its cafe and animal centre closed because of the coronavirus lockdown, the charity's main source of income has disappeared. Barry says that the donations received so far will keep the centre open until some time in June, but if the lockdown goes on much longer it will have to close, as it needs about £10,000 a month to survive.
