Another voluntary initiative providing a lifeline to people struggling to feed their families launches on Friday 24th July. St John's Summer Café will operate from 12 noon to 2pm on Fridays during the school holidays. Visitors will be given one bag with a hot meal of their choice (veggie option available) as well as a sandwich for later in the day and a dessert and hot drink - all to take away in these Covid-19 times. Families welcome.

Jenny Godfrey from St John's Parochial Church Council explains:

"The Summer Cafe is a project that Rev Julie has initiated and is aimed at anyone struggling at this difficult time. It’s all registered properly and the volunteers who are cooking have got a food and hygiene certificate. The food comes mostly from donations from the local community as well as local supermarkets who we have registered with to receive donations from.

"We also have groceries available and clothing and people can speak to us discreetly if they would like to have a bag of groceries as well or are in need of clothing for themselves or their children. We have sent this information to local schools as well."

The Summer Cafe will be held in the Parish Centre, which is the modern building that you can see at the back of the church if you walk up Bourne Hill.

Free food on Mondays too!

St Monica's Catholic Church has been providing free food on Monday afternoons since early April and continues to do so.

Fresh food items to take home, including fresh fruit and vegetables, are available between 3pm and 5pm at St Monica's Large Hall (Intimate Theatre) in Green Lanes - just past the junction with Bourne Hill.

Donations of food are welcome and can be dropped off on a Monday from 11am to 1pm under the canopy of the front double doors of St Monica’s Large Hall.

St Monica's also has a weekly food distribution and soup run on Mondays, which is in need of the following donations: dried pasta, rice, tinned fish, biscuits, tinned soup, tinned vegetables. Please leave donations under the Large Hall canopy between 1-3pm on Mondays, or in the box in the porch during church opening hours, or at the parish office.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
