Mayor's grant gives go-ahead for greening Green Lanes

Thanks to the pledges and likes posted by local people on Facehive, the Palmers Green Action Team's project to start creating a green chain from Broomfield Park to Hazelwood Rec is now assured financially. The money taking the project over the finishing line came in the shape of a grant of £4,065 from the Mayor of London. Added to the more than £1,500 pledged by individuals and organisations, that takes the total to just under £6,000, 128 per cent of the target of £4,363.

Stop the Slots campaigners still waiting for action

As the number of signatures on the Stop the Slots petition exceeds 4,100, the residents behind the campaign against a new gambling arcade in the the heart of Palmers Green are growing impatient about the lack of action on the part of Enfield Council. The cabinet member for licensing and regulatory services says that gambling premises do not fit the council's vision for town centres, but Merkur Slots say that they are a 'passionate supporter of high street regeneration'.

'Stop the Slot': Campaign against new gambling arcade continues

The online petition opposing a new gambling arcade in the centre of Palmers Green has now attracted just short of 4000 signatures in less than two weeks. The group of residents who first raised the alarm have christened their campaign Stop the Slot! and are continuing to question Enfield Council about the circumstances in which a 'bingo premises licence' was issued at the start of year to Merkur Slots to allow them to open a new arcade near the former Store 21 shop in Green Lanes. They will be asking all petition signatories to contact their councillors and will be giving interviews to local papers.

Gambling arcade opposition gathers momentum

A campaign opposing the opening of a 24-hour gambling arcade in Palmers Green has gained substantial support from local residents. By Tuesday evening, four days after its launch, nearly 2700 people had signed a petition to Enfield Council calling for a review of the gambling licence granted last month to a new branch of Merkur Slots in Green Lanes. The campaign has also attracted the backing of Enfield Southgate MP Bambos Charalambous, who has stated that he is "appalled" at the plans and has raised questions about the spread of high street gambling with the culture secretary.

Spreading to our high street - a nasty rash?

In July last year a trade journal serving the "coin-op amusement, casino and igaming industries" reported that a German company was opening a "rash of new UK arcades" using the Merkur Slots brand name. It now turns out that one of the town centres where the rash will be breaking out is Palmers Green, and some locals are not at all "amused" about the prospect of the new arcade.

The first links in a green chain between Broomfield Park and Hazelwood Rec

A green chain stretching from Broomfield Park all the way to Hazelwood Recreation Ground, allowing birds, butterflies and other pollinators to cross Green Lanes east/west - that's the vision of the Palmers Green Action Team. To get it started, they've launched a Spachive crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds needed to buy and put in place two trees to green the stretch of Green Lanes between the Triangle and the end of Hazelwood Lane

Stitch! is back in business!

After a busy fortnight rebuilding and settling into their new home inside Palmers Green post office, Stitch! is back up and running. The previously bare and boring shop in front of you when you enter from the street is now a cosy and colourful treasure trove of fabrics, wools, threads, buttons and general haberdashery.

Cross (the road) Stitch!

The current Stitch! shop on the corner of Devonshire Road closes on 8th October. Stitch! will be opening a new shop inside Palmers Green Post Office on 20th October.

The second item of new public art has now been installed at Palmers Green station - a mural along the fence leading down to the car park, created by ATM Street Art, commissioned by the Palmers Green Action Team and paid for by Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) from its Passenger Benefit Fund.

But overnight all were forced to close - to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Imagine how desolate our area would be if, when the restrictions are eventually lifted, many were never to open again.

Company fined for breaching fire regulations and risking lives of PG tenants

Harper Stone Property has been fined £20,000 for breaches of fire regulations which nearly led to loss of lives when a fire broke out four years ago at 268-278 Green Lanes in the centre of Palmers Green.

A roller skate rink for Palmers Green?

A crowdfunding appeal has been set up to raise money to convert an empty warehouse in Palmers Green into a roller skating rink. The project promises to provide a 'compelling destination' which will attract people to the area, give a 'vital spark' to the regeneration of Palmers Green, bring the community together and boost social inclusion.
