A modern day adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado - expect Zoot Suits instead of Kimonos and hot jazz numbers instead of the traditional operatic fare and a whole lot more! Are you over 60?  Are you 16-23? If so, join us for exciting FREE performance workshops leading to a 15 minute performance event at Bernie Grant Arts Centre. Ask your average music-lover to name half-a-dozen Germanic or Italian or Russian composers and he or she will rattle off a list with ease. But Scandinavian composers? Hmm. Well, Sibelius, of course, and Grieg, then, let's see, Nielsen, er ...... On the cold northern fringe of Europe, Scandinavia tends not to be thought of as a fully paid-up part of the continent's culture, at least as far as classical music is concerned. Talkies - the pop-up cinema with a difference - is expanding its reach to take in Winchmore Hill and is looking for volunteers in N21 to help choose films and find venues. Talkies Community Cinema showed its first film two years ago this month and has been attracting large audiences ever since.  Its events in Palmers Green (at the Fox, Baskervilles and the Intimate) and in Southgate (at St Monica's Parish Centre and at Christ Church) have frequently sold out.  it has also been showing.......

For the past couple of years every Friday evening has seen St Monica's Parish Centre on Cannon Hill transformed into "St Harmonica's Blues Club" - three hours of excellent music, swift service of very reasonably priced drinks, and a great sociable atmosphere.  Starting this month, the same venue will be open on Sunday evenings too for "Unplugged Sundays at St Monica's". The Sunday night gigs have been set up by Sharon Crowe and Colin Hook, the music loving team who run the Parish Centre.......

This year's Autumn Shed at Chickenshed runs from 27th to 31st October and is suitable for 5 to 12-year olds (Year 1 and upwards).  The cost is £130 (50% discount for siblings).  Hours are 10am to 4pm. Participants at this week-long event will explore and develop a wide range of performance skills through workshops that involve drama, dance, singing and story-making. Parents and friends will be invited in on the final afternoon to see a performance. Everyone is welcome regardless.......

Chickenshed Theatre is again running a series of theatre workshops for people aged 60 and above. The workshops will be on Mondays from 5pm to 6.30pm for six weeks, beginning on 8th September. The normal cost is £45 for the six weeks, but arrangements are possible for people who cannot afford this much. Participants will be offered free entry to two Community Chorus workshops, on 10th and 17th September at 6.30pm. Unlike the theatre workshops, these are open to younger people - the minimum.......

Saturday sees the start of the first ever Lamb Festival, a week of free events in All Saints Church, Edmonton, to commemorate the lives and work of Edmonton's most celebrated literary siblings - Charles and Mary Lamb. All the events are free (though donations are welcomed). A twelve-week course on painting with oils begins on Tuesday 22nd April in Wood Green, starting at 7.30pm.  The classes, intended for people of all ages, are taught by Mick Yates and will be held at the Burghley Road Children's Centre, London N8 OQG (near Turnpike Lane).
