Talkies - the pop-up cinema with a difference - is expanding its reach to take in Winchmore Hill and is looking for volunteers in N21 to help choose films and find venues.
Talkies Community Cinema showed its first film two years ago this month and has been attracting large audiences ever since. Its events in Palmers Green (at the Fox, Baskervilles and the Intimate) and in Southgate (at St Monica's Parish Centre and at Christ Church) have frequently sold out. it has also been showing foreign-language films at the Dugdale Centre in Enfield Town, where the raked theatre seating ensures that everyone can see the subtitles. Now it is looking to fill in the gap between these localities by holding screenings in Winchmore Hill during its Spring 2015 season.
As well as screening classics, rarely seen newer films and locally made films, Talkies events often have special elements - food and drink, live music, introductions by film professionals or fancy dress themes. At this month's showing of the original version of The Phantom of the Opera at Christ Church, there will be live music played on the church organ and the church will be candlelit.
The driving force behind Talkies is David Williamson, who set it up shortly after retirement, but he is assisted by a dynamic team of volunteers. David is now looking for additional volunteers from N21. In particular, he would like to know what films local people would like to see and where they would like to see them.
