A new locally based arts festival is running essay and photographic competitions which will be open only to Enfield residents or students at schools in the borough. It will celebrate two of Edmonton's most famous residents - the 18th Century essayist and poet Charles Lamb and his sister Mary, who was also a writer and collaborated.......

The next Talkies Community Cinema event at the Fox is an evening of short comedy films on 29th January. Wizards, mime artists, baristas and estate agents are among the comic delights contained in the ten short films making up Ha! Comedy Shorts. Organised by Kate and Gem from Short Sighted Cinema, the evening will bring London's short film glitterati to Palmers Green, where the audience will have an opportunity to talk to them about their work. A new U3A is being set up for the Palmers Green and Southgate area. An Open Meeting will be held on Wednesday 26th February at The Intimate Theatre, 521 Green Lanes, Palmers Green N13 4DH, starting at 2.30 pm. Doors will be open at 2.00 pm. This will be an opportunity to hear more about U3A and to find out about the interests of potential members. U3A stands for University of the Third Age. An art exhibition opening later this month at the Dugdale Centre is not entitled Watch Out! for nothing. It will comprise some 20+ paintings by Moshe Galili, a Palmers Green resident and Holocaust survivor, who fears that a neo-Nazi movement currently developing in his native Hungary and elsewhere in the former Soviet bloc could revive some of the horrors that he himself lived through as a young man. The third Southgate and Palmers Green Open Studios and Art Trail event will be held on 7th and 8th June 2014.  As in previous years, artists and a designers will be exhibiting their work to members of the public - some in their own homes or studios, others in local shops. Organiser Dan Maier is inviting creatives and shop owners to apply for inclusion in this year's Open Studios: We're looking for original beautifully made work.  We have an appreciative audience who've come to expect.......

Palmers Green's own community cinema, Talkies, is now in its second year. The enterprising venture was launched by David Williamson in October 2012 with a screening of A Man of No Ambition, a film about notable Palmers Green resident Ralph Hutchings. Fourteen months and 21 events later, Talkies will end its 2013 season with a Palmers Green double bill at the Fox on 11th December. Three locally based organisations are cooperating on an aural history project designed to discover how the arrival of rock'n'roll in the UK sixty years ago affected life in Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Enfield.  The question being posed by Joe Studman of Jaywalks, Sue Beard of Palmers Green Jewel in the North and Southgate District Civic Trust is: Do you remember the first days of rock and roll?
