The Ruth Winston Centre's familiar building in Green Lanes has been closed to members since March, but RWC continues to provide for its members. Like, it seems, almost all organisations, it has moved online and is using Zoom to run its classes - exercise, arts and crafts, dance, music, games and much more. Below, Centre manager Elizabeth Thoree updates readers on how this Palmers Green institution and its members have been copying with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Just under a quarter of care homes and nursing homes in the London Borough of Enfield experienced an outbreak of Covid-19 during the first wave. This is one of the findings of a report published by Healthwatch Enfield which looks at the impact of the Coronavirus on the borough's 89 care, nursing and assisted living homes. The report is based on a survey of staff, patients and residents' relatives carried out in August and September.

A new report from Sustain and London Food Link, funded by Trust for London, looks at how services that ensure older adults can access meals in their homes are run, both before the Covid-19 pandemic and during it, across London. In the capital, adequate provision of meals on wheels services were not in place prior to lockdown. Where these exist, many face the possibility of being cut, annually. New, innovative services were being established in a few locations even before Covid-19, demonstrating that viable, affordable and effective solutions exist that could improve lives for thousands of older and disabled adults. During the lockdown, many innovative community solutions arose, which show great promise for the future if they are supported and funded.

On 20th April the Enfield Independent reported the death from Covid-19 of Sonya Kaygan, a 26-year old employee of the Elizabeth Care Home in Highlands Village, Winchmore Hill. Sonya's death prompted an investigation by the Reuters news agency centered on Elizabeth Lodge and other local care homes, whose highly disturbing findings were published on 5th May.
