When at the end of 2020 Friends of Broomfield Park announced the launch of their Tree Project, they were surprised (and delighted) when individuals and businesses offered to donate trees for planting in the park. Obviously, they didn't turn down the offers and are now seeking further donations so that they can make their planting plans even more ambitious and turn Palmers Green even greener.

Like pretty much every local society or group, Enfield National Trust Association have had to move their meetings to Zoom and temporarily abandon their days out to National Trust properties and other places of interest. Monthly ENTA talks are open to non-members at a cost of £3 per talk

The next items of street art being created for PG under commission from the Palmers Green Action Team are taking a while... But that's hardly surprising, as they're a set of mosaics which will adorn Palmers Green Station and are being put together one little piece at a time.

The Ruth Winston Centre's familiar building in Green Lanes has been closed to members since March, but RWC continues to provide for its members. Like, it seems, almost all organisations, it has moved online and is using Zoom to run its classes - exercise, arts and crafts, dance, music, games and much more. Gardener Vic Black writes that people have told her that at one time there were up to 12 gardeners tending to the flowerbeds in Broomfield Park. More recently, however, there has been no brigade of park staff to keep the beds in check, so many were sadly reclaimed by the weeds. And that would probably still be the case, if the Friends of Broomfield Park had not stepped in...

In March, despite protests, Enfield's cabinet agreed to go ahead with a plan to set up a centralised children and families hub on the first and second floors, despite, it seems, not having identified a suitable new home for the borough's well regarded archives and local history library. Ever since local the Enfield Society and other civic sector organisations have been seeking in vain to enter into satisfactory dialogue with the council about this. They have now published an alternative plan which, they say, would not only allow the museum and archives to remain at the Dugdale, along with conference facilities and rooms for hire by community organisations, but would actually save more money than the council's proposal.

A new 'social hub' for Enfield residents aged 50 and above is launching soon and the organisers are inviting people to join. The project is being run by the Enfield Asian Welfare Association (EAWA), but people from all communities will be welcome.

The Palmers Green Action Team's project of commissioning artworks to improve our town centre has moved forward with the installation of this new station sign, created by the Bread Collective. The next step will be to add planting, which will grow up around the lettering.

Talkies - your local community cinema - launches its HERE Suburban Film Festival' on Friday 22 February with a Mike Leigh film shot in Enfield during Thatcher's Britain and continues through March with a feast of suburban stories. Talkies is also very proud to premiere six new short films from rising stars of the film world, commissioned by Talkies for the festival, using locations in our area of North London. The festival closes on Talkies' 200th event milestone with the classic 'Blues Brothers' with live music intro.
