Cervical cancer prevention and the mayoral candidates

Earlier this year a cross-party group from Enfield Council organised an online conference on the subject of cervical cancer awareness. Following the conference the organisers wrote to candidates standing for election as the next Mayor of London asking them to do a short video endorsement of the aims of the conference and of the importance of screening to catch any signs of cancer at an early stage. Rather disappointingly, only one of the candidates sent in a video - Sian Berry from the Green Party

Health charities call for ultra-low emissions zone to be extended to all of London

Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation are calling for the ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) to be extended to cover the whole of London in order to improve the health of sufferers from asthma and other lung diseases. They say Sadiq Khan's planned extension of the zone to the area within the North and South Circular Roads would leave 360,000 asthma sufferers exposed to harmful air. The Green candidate for mayor agrees with the charities, but the Conservative candidate has said he would cancel even the currently planned extension

Local therapist welcomes new guidance on chronic pain

On 7th April the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) issued new guidance to healthcare professionals regarding the effective treatment of chronic pain. According to Palmers Green-based clinical massage therapist and chronic pain specialist Steven Murdoch, the new recommendations have created both confusion and anger amongst people with persistent (chronic) pain and pain specialists alike. However, he believes the new guidance is a step in the right direction.

The People's Covid Enquiry: Session 1

The People's Covid Enquiry has been set up because of the urgent need to investigate how well or ill prepared the UK was for the pandemic and how well it has been dealing with it. A panel led by Michael Mansfield QC will hear statements from expert witnesses. Session 1 was held on 24th February and can be watched here.

Three community coronavirus rapid testing centres are now operating in Enfield borough, where people with no symptoms can turn up without an appointment for a lateral flow test. If you have Covid-19 symptoms, you should not attend one of these centres, but should self-isolate and phone 119 for a test appointment.

The Covid Symptom Study wants to expand the network of schools where its app is being used to help find out more about the spread of Covid-19 among children and how this affects the wider population. So far more than 450 schools have enrolled, but to increase the reliability of its data it needs more - teachers, parents and carers can all help it towards its target - 5000 schools.

Just under a quarter of care homes and nursing homes in the London Borough of Enfield experienced an outbreak of Covid-19 during the first wave. This is one of the findings of a report published by Healthwatch Enfield which looks at the impact of the Coronavirus on the borough's 89 care, nursing and assisted living homes. The report is based on a survey of staff, patients and residents' relatives carried out in August and September.

Keep London Safe campaign launched

London borough leaders, the mayor of London and community leaders across the capital joined in the launch of the 'Keep London Safe' campaign last week, to address low awareness of Covid-19 testing and contract tracing in the capital. The campaign follows polling that found 46 per cent of Londoners don't know how to get a test and 35 per cent know 'little or nothing' about NHS Test and Trace.

An investigation by two local journalists has revealed that, despite a pledge by health secretary Matt Hancock, care homes in Enfield were refused Covid-19 tests for symptomatic residents at the peak of the pandemic.

Covid-19 infections on the rise in Enfield?

The Covid Symptom Study suggests that cases have been increasing since 8th May across the country, though they are still a fraction of the peak estimate on 2nd April. The most recent estimate for Enfield is 1.1 per cent of the population - nearly twice the estimate at the beginning of the month. The Covid-19 Symptom Study is running out of funding and has launched an appeal for donations.
