The environmental group Thames 21 has issued a progress report on one of its north London projects - the Salmons Brook Healthy River Challenge.   During 2015 work was continued in Grovelands Park and along the Houndsden Gutter. Council to reinstate avenue of trees in Broomfield Park

Within the next few weeks Enfield Council is hoping to start work to restore the double avenue of trees in Broomfield Park which extends in a straight line across the whole of the top field from the western edge of the Park in the direction of the ornamental ponds and remains of Broomfield House.  The avenues and the remains of a former "causeway" running between the tree lines are regarded as important features relating to the Park's Baroque history. Broomfield Park nominated for award

Nominate your favourite open space for a national award

If you think a local park, sports field or other green space is "the UK's Best", you have until 4th November to submit a nomination to the organisation Fields in Trust. Fields in Trust is dedicated to protecting "vital open spaces all across the UK" and many parks, sports fields, playgrounds and other open spaces are members. Help Hazelwood Rec improve its playground

Friends of Hazelwood Rec have applied to the OneFamily Foundation for a grant of £25,000 to pay for improvements to the children's playground. Broomfield House - public consultation begins

Starting this week, local people will be asked by Enfield Council to give their views about what should be done with the fire-damaged remains of Broomfield House.  The consultation - oneline and by post - will also ask about options for the future of the historic Stableyard and of Broomfield Park as a whole. Flooding in Arnos Park

This was the scene in Arnos Park on Wednesday when the Pymmes Brook burst its banks and inundated part of the park, as captured by "Bob" and uploaded to his Vimeo channel. {vimeo}137419296{/vimeo} Reducing or preventing this sort of flash flooding is what Thames 21/Love the Lea are working so hard on.  They are deliberately slowing down streams by planting vegetation and creating soakaways.  Among the problems that they face, however, are misplumbed houses where waste that should go.......

Another Super Summer Sunday in the Park

As we confidently forecast in the weekly newsletter, last Sunday was hot and sunny and people turned out in droves to listen to the Broomfield Blues in Broomfield Park.  They also stopped by at the Community Orchard to admire the wildflowers, see how the apples were coming on, drink home-made apple wine and observe the insects in their bug hotel, the Bugsingham Palace.  A few visitors even tried their hand at croquet on the former bowling green.  And there were chilli plants on.......

Transforming Firs Farm

The Friends of Firs Farm have provided a copy of a document setting out the proposals for the creation of a wetlands area in the park.  The detailed information in the document is the subject of a consultation exercise in which Enfield Council are seeking the views of people living near the playing fields and park. It's just after a year since the Palmers Greenery Community Cafe opened in Broomfield Park - but work on this imaginative project goes back much longer.  It has transformed an abandoned toilet building into a top destination for visitors to the park. New reed bed in Groveland Park designed to reduce water pollution

A brand new reed bed is being constructed in Grovelands Park lake to help improve water quality. The reed bed is being created as part of Thames21’s Salmons Brook Healthy River Challenge together with Enfield Council. Sun shines on park promenaders

Despite rain earlier in the day, the Proms in the Park season got off to a hot and sunny start on Sunday afternoon.  A pleasant atmosphere prevailed as music lovers sat on the grass near the Broomfield Park bandstand to listen to music by North London Brass, with an intermission provided by young drummers from BishBashBosh and BoxBeaters.   There are three more Proms in the Parks concerts featuring a variety of musical styles - see below.  As well as the music and great.......

Breaking with their tradition of running photographic competitions over the winter, the Friends of Broomfield Park have announced that this year the competition will take place during the summer. Prizes will be awarded in two categories:  Adults and Under 16s.  You can enter up to three pictures, which must be taken "of the Park or in the Park" between 1st June and the closing date for entries, which is 22nd August.
