No longer a 'Work in Progress'

A trio of Palmers Green authors were out on the street in Green Lanes last weekend selling signed copies of their comic novel, Work in Progress, hot off the press. Thanks to a massive crowdfunding effort by some 250 supporters, their dream of getting the book published is no longer a work in progress - and it's already attracting rave reviews.

Plenty of interest in April's Enfield Dispatch

This month's news and features-filled Enfield Dispatch has several items directly concerning our bit of the borough. Stitch! gets a big feature ahead of its reopening next week. Däna Burstow provides an update on Palmers Green Action Team's projects for trees in large planters along Green Lanes. There's an interview with Melanie Smith, the minister at Palmers Green United Reformed Church, about a new foodbank in Ponders End. The petition against Merkur Slots opening in PG gets some column inches, PG resident Joseph Wagland has a letter calling for a skatepark, and there's notice of music events run by Livestock which will be held in Broomfield Park during July.

When we all stayed at home (the first time!)

Grange Park resident Katrina Campbell's dream of making a book out of her large collection of photographs recording life under lockdown has been turned into reality. There was a large enough and quick enough response to her Kickstarter campaign for her to get the book, When We All Stayed at Home, out in time for Christmas, hand delivered to addresses in the areas where the pictures were taken - Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Bush Hill Park, Edmonton and Enfield.

Tales of Life under Lockdown - the book

Winchmore Hill photographer Katrina Campbell is planning to turn her online exhibition Tales of Life under Lockdown into a book with the title When We All Stayed at Home and has launched a Kickstarter campaign to have it printed and published in time for Christmas. The idea isn't to create a large coffee table book to be saved for special occasions, but an A5 volume that can be shared at the kitchen table or read on the bus. What an excellent way of recording and remembering an extraordinary year!

Walks in the park that warm the heart

A 92-year old Palmers Green resident has raised more than £1200 for a hospital neonatal unit by daily walks in Broomfield Park. By the end of the month she's aiming to have walked 50 kilometres, visiting the bench the commemorates her late husband, in support of the FiftyforFinnley campaign. Her daughter, Jill Reidy, cut off from her mother by the lockdown, has sent me her story to warm readers' hearts.

A debut collection of poetry by Palmers Green resident Arun Jeetoo will be launched online this weekend. I Want to Be the One You Think About at Night is published by Waterloo Press. Jeetoo's poems have been described as 'agile, sensual and achingly honest' and 'pulling at the throbbing veins of love'.

PG songwriters pay tribute to those Working on the Frontline

A new single written by two musicians from Palmers Green vividly portrays life on the NHS frontline at the height of the pandemic. Working on the Frontline was written by Kate St John and Neill McColl and is performed by BAFTA-nominated actor and singer Jessie Buckley and her band Jessie & The Leonards.

Talkies - your local community cinema - launches its HERE Suburban Film Festival' on Friday 22 February with a Mike Leigh film shot in Enfield during Thatcher's Britain and continues through March with a feast of suburban stories. Talkies is also very proud to premiere six new short films from rising stars of the film world, commissioned by Talkies for the festival, using locations in our area of North London. The festival closes on Talkies' 200th event milestone with the classic 'Blues Brothers' with live music intro.
