A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Anne Nicholls' work to relieve period poverty, both initially in Kenya, and more recently in Enfield. Later this month she's off to Kenya to continue her work, but before that, on 12th June, in conjunction with Jackie Lee of North London Yoga, she's running a Wellbeing Day at Mayfield Tennis Club. They've invited lots of small, local businesses to join them and share their expertise on fitness, healing, health or general wellbeing.

A newspaper article has a photograph of the interior of St John's Church in Palmers Green piled high with boxes containing donations for Afghan refugees to this country. The church is continuing to provide meals to the hungry - more than 450 a week.

'This week we were all moved when a courageous couple told us they were genuinely starving and had walked over four miles to come to us with the simple request of some food. Their circumstances had involved a hard choice of eviction or starvation and they had chosen the latter. How can it be right that such a basic human need is not being met for so many in our borough?'

The appeal by the Friends of Broomfield Park for donations to help restore three of the park's borders has got off to a great start. Only four days after sending out their first email asking for donations, enough money had flowed in for the Friends to start work on one of the borders this autumn. However, the volunteers are still £1000 short of the amount they need to complete the project.

This year Dementia Action Week runs from 17th to 23rd May, with Denim for Dementia day on the Friday. PG resident Matt Wegner is a volunteer fundraiser for the Alzheimer's Society and is keen to get the local community and local groups engaged in raising money to help support people affected by dementia and in promoting a UK-wide campaign to Cure the Care System.
