No one day at Cooking Champions is the same and we never know who may approach us for help.

This week we were all moved when a courageous couple told us they were genuinely starving and had walked over four miles to come to us with the simple request of some food. They didn't ask for huge quantities or items that we might consider a treat. All they wanted was some tinned meat as they knew that would fill them up and keep them warm.

Their circumstances had involved a hard choice of eviction or starvation and they had chosen the latter. How can it be right that such a basic human need is not being met for so many in our borough?

Cooking champions wants to raise awareness of stories like this that are happening in our borough. On our doorstep.

As well as filling their bags with lots of food we've made sure that this couple will get weekly support through our food parcels until they are back on their feet again.

It isn't about handouts to people that don't want to help themselves. Cooking Champions is about supporting people during challenging times so that they don't need to worry about when they will next be able to eat.

Any donation how ever small really does make a difference to those in need.

This article in today's Independent continues the theme of the ill effects of poverty on people in our country. It's a sad indictment of modern Britain that in the same week as we learn that an MP earns £1000 an hour on his "second job" we hear of people living near to us who have to choose between eating and not losing their home.

This cannot go on!
The gap between rich and poor is widening and useless politicians are sitting on their hands.
The day of reckoning will come, and nobody will like it!
Remember from France centuries ago "let them eat cake".
