If you're 40 or above and live in the UK, you could help a research project that is looking at how people's thinking skills change - or in some cases stay the same - as we get older.
The research is being led by Dr Alan J. Gow, Associate Professor in Psychology at the School of Social Sciences, Heriot-Watt University, and is collecting data using a survey, which you can fill in online or on paper. Either way, it should take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

A researcher at the Royal College of Art is appealing for people to help answer questions about the problems which some older people find in using digital technologies.
By interviewing people who have difficulty using computers, mobile phones etc or are simply not keen on trying them, Emily Groves is contributing to a joint Swiss-UK project to design a digital tool to enhance social ties for older people in existing communities. Enfield residents aged 50 or above may qualify for free a free energy check of their home and advice about how to stay warmer without paying higher bills for gas and electricity. If appropriate the HEET scheme will arrange for work to be done free of charge.
If you think you or someone you know might qualify, don't delay, as the scheme is funded only up to 29th January (and the rest of the winter is expected to be much colder than it has been so far).

If you've ever suffered depression and it only started when you were 55 or older, the Royal Free Hospital would like to hear from you.
The Royal Free is carrying out a study designed to improve the understanding of the causes of late-onset depression. Volunteers are needed to help researchers investigate neural pathways in the brains of older people with depression, with the aim of developing more effective treatments.

The Guide helps people to stay physically and mentally well by providing “hints and tips” on how to keep fit and independent.

Delivered in conjunction with the HEET Project, Age UK Enfield is offering free home energy visits to people aged 50 and over living in the London Borough of Enfield. The service is particularly aimed at older people who are finding it difficult to keep their homes warm and are therefore at risk of cold-related illnesses. This could include people who are struggling to pay their bills, who are in fuel debt, who have no heating, or don’t know how to work.......

Companion animals and the elderly
It is widely acknowledged that pets can positively benefit the well-being of elderly owners. For many elderly people living on their own, their pets are their reason for living.
They are constant companions - on hand 24 hours a day, every day, comforting, loving and protecting their owners - not only from outside threats, but also offering the more subtle form of protection from loneliness and despair.
