Heritage and Conservation

The project to indentify and record local "built heritage" that we have reported on previously (on 6th June and 13th June) is now well under way, but there is still time for new volunteer surveyors to come forward and for anyone to suggest buildings or other objects that they think might be suitable for "local listing". The project involves many local societies and other groups, but the three main bodies involved are Enfield Council, the Enfield Society and Urban Vision.  Urban Vision are.......

These are the new shopfronts in original style that were recently installed in Myddleton Road, Bowes Park, replacing the unattractive frontages that had been fitted to these shops. The restoration work cost more than £200,000, the funds coming from Haringey Council, Historic England and the shopkeepers.  As well as the work on the shopfronts, new sash windows have been fitted to upper storeys. The organisers of the Save the Green Dragon campaign have reported that their email account has been attacked by hackers and are asking supporters to resend messages.  It is unclear whether this is an example of the "normal" type of Internet crime or a deliberate attempt to sabotage the campaign. During June hackers broke into the email account and diverted messages sent to the campaign to another email address that the hackers control.  As a consequence, the Campaign did not receive.......

Enfield Council sets up Trent Park Mansion Working Group The Council has set up a cross party councillor Working Group to work with the Receiver tasked with finding a buyer for the Trent Park Mansion building. Mike McClean, organiser of the Save the Green Dragon campaign, is asking supporters to reply to a survey being run by the pub's new owners, Green Lanes Investments.  Mike's message is reproduced below. Friends, The developers who currently own the Green Dragon pub have, via their PR Company, started to distribute promotional material around the local area which is intended to try and gain some support for their plan to end 300 years of Winchmore Hill history for their own.......

As we reported last week, Enfield Council in conjunction with the Enfield Society and Historic England are planning to recruit and train local community groups and individuals to help with a project to create a comprehensive new local list of heritage assets in the borough.  The training will enable volunteers to identify buildings and structures that are worthy of listing. The Enfield Society and Enfield Council are planning a project to review Enfield’s local heritage list and are looking for volunteers to help. The local listing replaced the old Grade III listing which ceased to be continued in 1974. Enfield has a list of buildings and features of special architectural or historic interest on its website. However, this is out of date and needs complete revision. The Enfield Society is working with Enfield Council to help to do this. Consultants are.......

Southgate District Civic Trust's application to register the Fox pub as an Asset of Community Value has been successful.  Enfield Council notified the Trust last week that the application had satisfied the rigorous requirements set down in the legislation - the first ACV application to do so anywhere in the borough. An important factor was undoubtedly the fact that important community events are held in the large function room at the rear of the Fox.  Recently the room has been used.......

The completion of work to restore and refurbish the Minchenden Oak Garden was celebrated on Sunday when the Bishop of London presided at a Redication Ceremony. The Bishop of London and Rev. The Save the Green Dragon Campaign is reporting that its demonstration outside the Civic Centre on Wednesday went well - they estimate that about 150 protesters turned out.  They were able to deliver an open letter (see below) to the new Mayor, Councillor Patricia Ekechi, and to the many councillors who were there to witness her induction into office.
