Tig Trafford playing guitar outside house

Richard McKeever writes:

There have been few things to celebrate in recent weeks, but in challenging times the simple pleasure of live music has been a joyous celebration every Thursday evening.

Tig Trafford has been playing live music locally for many years - you may have seen him at Broomfield Blues in the Park last summer - maybe as part of the Palmers Green Community Orchard Wassailing sessions ... or at one of several open mic nights... but in recent weeks all live music venues have been closed.

Tig, undaunted, has been putting on an impromptu musical performance from home every Thursday evening. With his guitar, mandolin and a seemingly endless repertoire of songs he plugs in his amp on the driveway of his Palmerston Road home, just south of Trinity at Bowes church, and lifts the spirits with his regular 7:30pm gigs. Song choices from old favourites to Neil Young, from the Kinks' Dedicated Follower of Fashion to Rag'n'Bone Man, entertain a mixed crowd of suitably socially-distanced neighbours gathered on the street and watching-on from windows. It has become a bright spot in my week and provided a lovely way to connect with neighbours as we sing along together. Tig has had notes posted through his the door, requesting specific songs which he has learned for his Thursday performances. A particular favourite of mine last night was a powerfully heartwarming performance of Bowie's Heroes dedicated to key workers on the front line.

Thanks, Tig for an uplifting and joyous celebration each week and connecting our local community.

If you are around Palmerston Road next week come along and enjoy live music with your neighbours.

Thursday 11th June will be the last of Tig's weekly recitals.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
