We're still waiting for one of the glories of Palmers Green to shrug off its plastic cocoon and reveal itself to visitors to Broomfield Park!
Broomfield Conservatory has been hidden away for much longer than was expected when repairs and redecoration began some time last year. But don't worry, unlike nearby Broomfield House, when the sheeting is taken away our lovely local delight will still be there, waiting for us to visit and admire on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons.
When that will be isn't yet clear, but it's unlikely to be before late April. Once the work is complete, the plastic sheeting is gone and the scaffolding is removed, volunteers from the Friends of Broomfield Park's conservatory group will have to clean the inside thoroughly and deal with any plant pests that have taken advantage of their long absence. On top of that, there will be the problem of plants that haven't survived the long period when no sunlight has penetrated the sheeting, so a lot of new planting will be needed. The Friends regard this as "an opportunity to raise our game", so we could be be in for some pleasant surprises...
To help raise money for new plants, the Friends will be holding one of their regular plant sales on 14th April, just outside the conservatory railings. There'll be indoor and outdoor plants available, along with growing advice. Please take bags with you to carry your purchases home - and take cash too - no cards accepted.
