Your NHS needs you!

NHS Volunteer Responders has been set up to support the NHS during the COVID-19 outbreak. To do this we need an 'army' of volunteers who can support the 1.5m people in England who are at most risk from the virus to stay well. Our doctors, nurses and other professionals will be able to refer people in to NHS Volunteer Responders and be confident that they have been matched with a reliable, named volunteer.

The stringent rules about visiting patients at the North Middlesex Hospital, especially those with COVID-19 (coronavirus) and patients awaiting test results for COVID-19, are particularly upsetting for families, so the hospital is appealing people with spare tablet computers or smartphones to donate them in order to facilitate 'virtual visits'.

In common with all parts of England, the NHS in Enfield is suffering from shortages of GPs and hospital staff, accident and emergency departments at the North Mid and Barnet hospitals are struggling and patients are having to wait longer for planned operations. Enfield's NHS is not alone in being underfunded too, but even compared with neighbouring north London boroughs Enfield suffers from a particularly severe funding problem. And, again like everywhere in England, Enfield's NHS is in the middle of a major reorganisation. More than a month of almost daily donations of gifts, time and experiences has brought smiles and 'happy tears' to the faces of patients and staff at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, prompting Trust senior leaders to send out a community-wide 'Thankyou' for the incredible generosity. From major companies to small community groups, and professional sports stars to individual families and former patients, the donations have ranged from toys and games, to clothes and snacks - and even a mini ride-on electric car!

Discontinuation of walk-in GP access on weekends and public holidays

As of 1st October it is no longer possible to use the 'walk in service' at Evergreen Primary Care Centre, Eagle House Surgery and Carlton House Surgery to get a GP appointment during the weekends and public holidays. The evening and weekend GP service will continue to operate, but access to the service will be via appointment only.

Consultation: Reducing opening hours at Chase Farm urgent care centre

The Urgent Care Centre at Chase Farm Hospital is currently open 8am – 10pm every day but local decision-makers and providers are looking at the possibility of changing this. It is proposed that the Centre closes one hour earlier, at 9pm every day. This would mean that you could arrive up to 9pm to be seen before having to use an alternative service elsewhere.

From this week, there have been changes to how you can book an evening and/or weekend GP appointment in Enfield. The previous telephone number (03000 333 666) will no longer be available. You can book an appointment via your GP practice (if they are open) or via calling 111.

Enfield Southgate MP visits Macmillan Cancer Support team at the North Mid

Bambos Charalambous MP took time out of his busy schedule on Friday 10th May to visit Macmillan Cancer Support professionals at North Middlesex University Hospital. He has a particular interest in the exceptional work taking place within the Macmillan Palliative care team at the hospital. Mr Charalambous hopes that their example of good practice can be replicated across the country in line with his recently proposed private members bill aiming to improve the provision of care for terminally ill patients nationwide to make the system better and fairer.
