While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.
Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.
For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.
Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
For transport to become environmentally sustainable we need to shift a significant proportion of journeys to non-polluting modes - walking, cycling or public transport. But doing so can also improve our environment in other ways, making it safer, cleaner, quieter, more sociable. A short film, partly filmed in Palmers Green, gives a glimpse of how we can have better streets.
StopPGMerkurSlots have provided some updated information about their campaign against the opening of 24-hour gambling arcade in the centre of Palmers Green.
The campaign against a 24-hour slot machine arcade planned for Green Lanes is moving into a new phase, following success in applying for a review by the council of the 'bingo' licence that was granted to Merkur Slots in December. The review will be discussed by Enfield Licensing Committee on 16th June. Ahead of the review there will be a four-week period - 21st April to 18th May - during which interested parties can make further representations.
As they continue to work on finalising their application for a review of the gambling licence issued to Merkur Slots, leading activists from the campaign group StopPGMerkurSlots will this week be asking for advice from the chair of an all party parliamentary group (APPG).
In the week that we were all shocked by the killing of a tiny baby by a dangerous driver, we need to hammer home the message of London's former top traffic cop in this interview for Crimewatch Live: 'Don't speed, challenge your friends, your family, your colleagues not to speed, and make it unacceptable. '
The StopPGMerkurSlots campaign has been continuing to collect evidence for a review of a licence for a new branch of the Merkur Slots gambling arcade chain planned for Green Lanes. The campaign has the support of local councillors and the council leader and is being assisted by council officers, but as a review would be a lengthy process (nine to ten weeks) it may not be completed before the new arcade opens.
A recently published Environmental Statement by the Enfield Society indicates support for measures to reduce car use and encourage walking and cycling, while stressing that the Society 'is careful not to become involved in political debate' and 'will only support schemes where it can be clearly demonstrated that reduced traffic flows in some areas do not significantly increase them elsewhere'. Cycling 'is not just the preserve of young people, it should be viewed as an important mode of transport'. By discouraging car use 'our air will be cleaner, our health better, the burden on the NHS reduced and deaths/serious injuries on the roads reduced'.
The group campaigning against a 24-hour gambling venue in Palmers Green says it has gathered substantial evidence to submit for a review of the application licence.
They took a long time to piece together, but at last the mosaic artworks for Palmers Green station are in place. They've been installed in existing recesses in the wall underneath the stairs to Platform 2 and can be viewed as an ensemble from the very front of Platform 1.
On 23rd March Enfield Southgate MP Bambos Charalambous presented a petition to parliament requesting a review of gambling premises licences granted during the coronavirus lockdown, citing the case of the granting of a licence for a 24-hour gambling licence for a new branch of Merkur Slots in Palmers Green.
