Walking and Cycling Grants London is a programme which supports London’s diverse communities to walk and cycle more often and more safely. The programme, funded by Transport for London and administered by Groundwork London, offers grants to projects of up to £10,000 over a three year period.
The programme aims to:

  • Increase walking and cycling in London (including new, lapsed or occasional cyclists)
  • Increase confidence in walking and cycling
  • Increase walking and cycling frequency
  • Make bike ownership more accessible
  • Introduce exercise to people who are particularly inactive via walking and cycling
  • Reduce social isolation and get people involved in their local community

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the Walking and Cycling Grants London scheme your organisation must operate within Greater London and be one of the following groups:

  • a community organisation
  • a charity or third sector organisation
  • a not for profit organisation, community interest company (CIC) or social enterprise.

Projects that are suitable for funding are those which:

  • will encourage people to walk or cycle more often and more safely for transport, exercise or leisure, particularly those who are new to cycling, used to cycle but no longer do so or are infrequent cyclists; and
  • will focus on connecting with a diverse range communities which are currently detached, for a variety of reasons, from walking or cycling in London.

Michael Diamond from London Living Streets has sent a list of ways in which community groups might be able to take advantage of the walking and cycling grants.

The TfL Cycling Grants programme has now been extended to walking projects too and TfL is inviting (up to 16th September) applications for grants of up to £10,000 for 3 year projects that encourage London’s diverse communities to walk and cycle more often and more safely.

The full details and website is: https://wcgl.london/ so if you have any projects that fit the bill please do apply, TfL are really keen to support walking projects.

Grants for walking projects may get some leeway this year but looking at the grants to cyclists over the last few years may give you some ideas…

  • Something to help young people to cross the road safely – training through visits to schools like the ones the traffic police used to do. Look at Brake’s training page http://www.brake.org.uk/facts-resources/21-resources/315-childtraining

  • Young adults could be better informed through very short videos for social media that shows their increased vulnerability when distracted.

  • You could seek funding around an activity during Road Safety Week (18 – 24 November this year)

  • Handing out hi-vis armbands could be something worth revisiting if we can get other messages with it.

  • Health and fitness for all groups will be popular so think of ways to get people out to local destinations – walking to local appointments or local shops. Local maps showing the permeability of streets around rail stations and the concentric rings showing walking times.

  • Local walking maps showing specifically safer routes, local destinations and local routes like the Thames Path, Green Link Way, Jubilee Greenway, Jubilee Walkway, Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk, London Wall Walk, Capital Ring, Wandle Trail, Lea Valley Walk and the London Loop
If there is a volunteer service for any vulnerable or minority group that you know that is being done on foot then that too may qualify for a grant.
Please do also pass on this on to any groups that you work with that might be interested!
