We've received the following request for help with a PhD project.

royal holloway and leverhulme logos

My name is Courtney Hagen Ford, and I am a student at Royal Holloway University of London. I am working on a PhD project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, which is looking at how parents use technology to keep an eye on their children and teens and how this is responded to.

Who Can Take Part in This Research?

I am looking to speak to families who meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least one parent who would like to do an interview
  • Have at least once child between the ages of 5 to 16 who would like to do an interview -
  • Use any form of technology to keep an eye on their children or teens (software, apps, products, etc)

What taking part in research means

I would like to start with a family group interview, where I chat with you, your partner/spouse if you have one, and your child(ren) about themes like technology, risk, what it means to be a mum or dad, and what it means to be a kid or teen. We will also do a group activity together where we make word clouds about the themes. I expect this will take half an hour to an hour.

After we do this, I would like to arrange follow-up interviews where I can speak to parents and children separately about the word clouds we made and discuss the topics that came up in the first interview. I expect each interview to take about half an hour to an hour.

I would like to audio-record and transcribe the interviews. I will provide everyone who participates with a summary of the research when it is completed.

Everyone who participates is welcome to stop an interview at any time, or drop out of the study at any time. You will not have to give me a reason.

Confidentiality

I will not share what is said in the separate interviews with anyone else in the family.

You are welcome to keep the word clouds, although if you do I would like to take photographs of them.

When I come to writing up the project, everyone will be given a false name in order to protect your privacy. You are welcome to choose your own name if you like.

Your personal information will be stored separately to all other information.

If I have any concerns about the wellbeing of anyone participating in the study, I will privately give this person an information leaflet with contact details for various supportive organisations. If I have concerns about the immediate wellbeing of anyone participating, I will have to contact relevant authorities.

I will ask you to sign a consent form before interviews take place.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
