About the project
Poetry flows through Enfield. It suffused the clay and was fired into the bricks used to build its houses. Why else should Enfield have so many poets starting with Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Raleigh, James I, through Thomas Hood, Charles Lamb, Keats, Stevie Smith and now Enfield Poets? Out of this arose the “Enfield in Poetry” map. Here markers are placed on a map of Enfield which, when clicked upon, produce a menu with an audio file of a poem relating to that spot on the map. In the case of the monarchs and Raleigh, a poem we imagine was written when they lived in Enfield.
Most are poems written and recorded by contemporary poets, 2021, and we hope that when the map is published more poems will be submitted for inclusion.
