A volunteers group's ambitious plans to build a new community hub are coming closer to fruition as contractors start work at a construction site just off Firs Lane, on a disused car park close to Firs Farm Wetlands.

The latest supporters newsletter issued by the Friends of Firs Farm has photos of the site showing the padstones that the prefabricated modular building will rest on. The building itself will arrive at Firs Farm at the end of the month, following a two-day journey from St Helens in Lancashire on a low-loader.

The hub will be a substantial building with toilets and a cafe, as well as rooms that can be hired out. The trustees managing the project re working on an action plan aimed at bringing a wide range of activities to the community, for people of all ages. They hope that it will be open from 7am for early exercise classes, with the community space available for hire for classes, groups and workshops throughout the day and evening, up to 10pm.

Any groups interested in hiring out the new facility are asked to get in touch with the Friends at .

Though the hub building should be in place very soon, it won't open until enough money is raised to fit it out internally. See information about the fundraiser below.

Fundraising to fit out the Community Hub

Last week we were delighted to receive £10,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation, a family founded grant-maker that gives money to support a wide range of charities across the UK.

Our fundraising still has to continue in earnest, to furnish the community hub, with a shopping list of both essential fixtures and fittings as well as specialist equipment, such as fitting out the sensory room.

The faster we raise cash, the sooner we will be able to open the community café and share it with families, footballers, dog walkers, exercisers, schools – ie you, your family and friends.

Could you potentially organise a fundraising event for the Friends of Firs Farm?

Are you able to make another donation?
