strelitzia in broomfield conservatory

plectranthus in broomfield conservatory

It's now two months since our local mini-Kew, Broomfield Conservatory, closed for repairs and redecoration. The latest forecast is that the work might be completed in late February. Volunteers from the Friends of Broomfield Park conservatory group have been visiting five times a week to water the plants and give them a bit of tlc.

Meanwhile, plant life goes on, mostly unseen, but here's a glimpse of what's happening this week, captured by Liz MacNicol.

Winter is when one of the Conservatory's most spectacular residents is at its best - the Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) plants show off their sharp pointed beaks and orange plumage.

Also in flower at the moment is Plectranthus. The flowers are normally lilac, but his year they're white. This is presumably because of the unusual light conditions inside the Conservatory. Scaffolding and boarding around the structure have blocked out most of the natural light, and instead "grow lights" are providing temporary artificial lighting.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
