A reminder about a petition started by Gina Sone-Demetrious calling for improved safety measures on the A10 in Edmonton, where in January her sister Laura was killed while using a pedestrian crossing.

petition headline improve road safety measure on the a10The driver who hit Laura is suspected of dangerous driving. Gina points out that in 2019 there were 1,752 fatalities and 25,945 seriously injured casualties due to dangerous driving in the UK and in 2020, there were 1,160 fatalities, 1,580 serious injured casualties and 22,575 slight injured casualties resulting from dangerous driving incidents, commenting that

These deaths and injuries are not statistics. They are friends, family members and loved ones whose lives have been cut short by irresponsible actions on the roads.

The petition calls for a comprehensive examination and renovation of the current road safety measures on the A10, adding

It's not just about making the A10 safe; it's about ensuring that no family must endure the pain of losing a loved one unnecessarily.

As well as demanding better safety measures on this stretch of road, the petition calls for nationwide road danger reduction measures:

  • harsher penalties for dangerous drivers
  • mandatory black boxes
  • a graduated licensing system for new drivers
  • engine restrictions for new and young drivers.

Four years ago a successful campaign persuaded Transport for London to install speed cameras on a stretch of the A10 further north, in Enfield. There has since been a significant reduction in injuries along this part of the road, while injuries on the Edmonton section have remained at a similar level.

Since this time last week a further 40 people have signed the petition asking for more measures to reduce dangerous driving on the A10 through Edmonton and more generally on roads throughout the country. James Cracknell, editor of Enfield Dispatch, has been in touch with Transport for London's head of policing and community safety, who told him that TfL would be meeting local representatives from the council in the coming weeks to discuss local people’s concerns about road danger here. See the link below for more details.

Another voice calling for action on A10 speeding (as well as modified car exhausts and car meets) is Councillor James Hockney, who has launched a Charter for Action addressed to the Mayor of London and Enfield Council. In a tweet last week he called on the borough's three MPs to support his campaign.

It would be nice to see more cross party collaboration on this rather than Red and Blue each advocating for the same change but independently for credit.
