Hi, the early reports on the accident gave the wrong location. It actually happened at the junction of Green Lanes and Compton Road which is on the left side of the photo published. This was later corrected in the Enfield Dispatch and other news media.

Following the death of 8-year-old Marigien, who was run over by a car at the junction of Green Lanes and Compton Road on 28th April, a fundraiser has been set up by Antonia Koublis and has so far raised £9,664 to help his family.

The photograph above, of a shrine to Marigien near the site of the collision, was taken by Maggie Westhead and posted to her account on Twitter.

In the Twitter thread, Maggie asks:

  • Why wasn’t the driver arrested @MPSEnfield?
  • Why isn’t Green Lanes - a densely residential area - a 20mph limit @EnfieldCouncil?
  • Why do we accept kids being killed on our roads?

In later tweets she writes:

Definitely cannot let this poor young boy’s death go without action. The roads around here are terrible. Something has to change.
[...]
I had an incident at that very junction with a Sainsbury’s van driver less than a month ago. It’s horrible to cross with kids. The wide junction encourages (selfish) drivers to have a sense of entitlement and drive quickly and aggressively in and out…
[...]
The depressing thing is I drove down Compton Road today and business as usual - an aggressive driver right up behind me trying to get past and I was driving at the 20mph limit on that road. How do we change that sort of selfish driving? I see it every day.

Society has sadly decided to just accept this kind of road violence. Just look at the people out there making excuses and blaming the cycle lanes/road layout/Council for this tragedy. Not the driver.
