“If we all choose the fastest mode of travel in a city, the whole city gets slower – and more congested”

There have been a number of recent postings about modelling transport. This article, based on a research paper printed yesterday, covers modelling and congestion impacts prepared by members of Oxford and UCL universities.

The full (heavy reading) research piece is available via The Royal Society; TRS being as high as it gets in UK science.

It compares everyone acting selfishly (in driving a car in their analysis) versus choosing a transport mode to benefit society as a whole rather than simply themselves. It appears more active travel by more people is the way to go for everyone to benefit. "By trying individually to win, we all lose."
