A senior manager of the parent company behind a new 24-hour slot machine arcade in Palmers Green has said that he is sure that visitors to the "entertainment centre" will be as excited as he is about the new venue. However, many local residents are likely to be less than enthusiastic about the opening, which followed a widely supported but ultimately unsuccessful campaign for the withdrawal of its operating licence.
The remark by Mark Schertle, chief operating officer of Merkur Casino UK, is included in a press release issued to mark the opening of the new branch of Merkur Slots in Green Lanes, not far from Palmers Green Triangle. The company says that the arcade, equipped with "the latest bingo slot machines, with the emphasis firmly on low-stakes gaming," and offering free refreshments, will create ten new jobs.
In all the German-owned company is planning to create 500 new jobs in Merkur Slots arcades this year in the UK, with an average of around ten per branch.
A demonstration outside the premises in June was addressed by Southgate MP Bambos Charalambous and by Labour and Green Party members of the London Assembly. It followed the cancellation of a review of the shop's gambling licence after a legal challenge was filed against Enfield Council, raising the prospect of the local authority facing considerable financial costs if it proceeded with the review.
10 LOCAL JOBS CREATED AS MERKUR SLOTS OPENS NEW ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE IN PALMERS GREEN
Leading gaming company MERKUR Slots has opened its £200K entertainment centre on Green Lanes in Palmers Green – creating 10 new local jobs in the process.
The opening is part of a nationwide programme that will see MERKUR Slots invest over £10 million on UK high streets over the next 6 months.
Mark Schertle, chief operating officer of MERKUR Slots’ parent company MERKUR Casino UK, said: “We pride ourselves on our continued investment in UK high streets, and so it means a lot to be able to support the local community and economy here in Palmers Green through the creation of these new jobs. Every new venue we open creates an average of 10 new local jobs and we are well on course to create 500 jobs nationwide by the end of the year.”
The new Green Lanes venue features the latest bingo digital slot machines, with the emphasis firmly on low stake gaming and pay-outs ranging from £5 to £500, and an extensive library of new and classic games. Customers also receive unlimited free refreshments.
“Our aim with the new state-of-the-art entertainment centre is to give both new and existing customers a unique gaming experience in an environment that reflects the scale of the investment,” added Mark. “I’m sure those visiting over the next few days and weeks will be as excited about this new MERKUR Slots venue as I am.”

A moment of rare inter-party agreement at last week's full council meeting in Enfield! The subject - local authorities' lack of power to control local gambling industry outlets. A council report discussed during the meeting showed that all eight betting shops that had closed in the borough since January 2019 had been replaced with either adult gaming centres or bingo halls, but noted that it was “very difficult” to reject these applications. The unsuccessful local campaign against the new Merkur Slots branch in Palmers Green - one of those new "bingo halls" - was cited in the debate by former council leader Doug Taylor.
