This afternoon we went on one of the history tours of Alexandra Palace, where you're taken on a guided walk around parts of the Palace that are closed off, including the Victorian theatre and part of the BBC studios.
Some of the areas that we visited will be refurbished using Heritage Lottery Fund money - but it's interesting seeing them in their neglected and dilapidated state. The tour also includes a film about the internment of Germans and others during World War 1. 3000 men were confined there in very crowded conditions for four years with little or no privacy, and some of them ended up in Colney Hatch Asylum (later renamed Friern Hospital and now expensive flats).
There is no fixed schedule for the tours - they are held when another event at the Ally Pally means that there will be a first aider to hand - and they always sell out early. But if you sign up to the mailing list you'll be notified in advance and have a chance to jump in before other people.
