A cinema for PG? Back to the drawing board for campaigners

Six months ago PGC called on readers to help the Palmers Green Action Team and Arthouse Cinema's efforts to persuade landlords of large empty properties in PG to agree to lease a building to the successful Crouch End company for them to turn it into a cinema and community hub for Palmers Green. Earlier this week, regrettably, the Action Team posted the news on their Facebook page that they had been unsuccessful. However, they are now seeking a building suitable for a more modest cinema.

This was the enticing image that accompanied the October 2022 campaign to persuade landlords to help bring a cinema to PG. Arthouse and the PG Action Team are now looking for a smaller building with room for two screens.

Despite our very best efforts and a lot of time, energy and emotion we are sad to say that @arthousen8 are not able to proceed with leasing one of the bigger empty sites on the high street. We had made some very positive progress but for many reasons outside of our control, the deal is not going to go ahead. We have been trying for over 3 years and giving it our all.

Nevertheless, Arthouse still want to come to PG but are now actively looking for a smaller site to host 2 screens, 3-4000 sq foot in size. So we still need your support, we need the community to think creatively about spaces, do you know of sites coming available? Do you know landlords we can speak to? Please make suggestions! We won’t give up as we know this is something that PG would hugely benefit from. But for now, it’s back to the drawing board.

More details of requirements: 3.5m head height. Lease terms, longer is better, footfall is important but not essential as it’s a destination, but we would prefer it on the high st in PG.

The action team have worked so hard on this. I would have thought any landlord would have preferred to have a tenant than not have one and get no income. Plus a thriving high street makes other units more attractive.
There must be some reason to say no that isn’t apparent to those of us who don’t own commercial buildings. I’m a bit mystified

Just re-fitting an existing cinema can cost £3k a seat so completely building a new one out of a non-purpose built retail unit is probably very expensive. I imagine, for all the hard work, commercial reality killed this deal off - the kind of thing that only works with government subsidy (like has been seen elsewhere, north of London, with Future High Street funds etc).
