After two days sky watching a huge brown bird of prey majestically ride thermals over PG I’m told it was a kite (bird not toy). It seems kites were reintroduced into Buckinghamshire in 2005 (?), one of a few such sites in the UK, and can often be seen over the M40. With a wingspan not far short of 2m they’re a big beast but apparently feast only on such things as guinea pigs and worms rather than small children. I can only I imagine this one was taking a short bank holiday w/e break like many other UK residents.

One of the reasons for the relative explosion of the Red Kites has been garden feeding. However, the Chilterns Conservation Board is asking people not to continue to do this, they believe that they should be left to feed naturally in the wider countryside, thus enabling them to find a naturally sustainable level.
