Not a solution to driver complaints about circuitous LTN routes but instead part of an insect super highway planned to criss -cross the UK; this one running across the capital, north to south, from Enfield to Croydon. It’ll also take in many of our other splendid local parks: Grovelands, Oakfield and Arnos included.
We can all do our bit in helping challenges of the wider insect world : hows and whys are explored here https://www.buglife.org.uk/our-work/b-lines/ and its several click-throughs.
Across the UK local councils such as Hull and Rotherham have decided to leave verges uncut – which saves money and is positive for climate change – and have planted some of these extensively with wildflowers.
Closer to home as part of its own Climate Change Plan, nearby Haringey is aiming to reduce the amount of verge cutting. In Bounds Green the residents association, BGDRA, is drafting a proposal for Haringey to pilot wildflower planting on some strips (perhaps 10m x 2m) of the wide verges which run along Bounds Green Road.
It’s a simple sounding idea which must have potential to spread locally into many groups and micro locally into our gardens, window boxes, planting around tree bases and more.
Who knows what might emerge from personal actions –I spent much happy time this weekend watching two tits darting back and forth having taken up residence in a bird box I made out of scrap wood a couple of years back and stuck on the fence.
