[Original article]

tower house quakers walkSince moving to north London in 2008 I've done a lot of local exploration, mostly involving combining bus rides with walking. Around ten years ago, following the New River, I headed up Bush Hill Road from the northern end of Green Lanes. It wasn't the first time I'd walked up there - I remember going through the area some time in the 1980s, following a route in a London Transport Walks book which ended up at Forty Hall. But this time I departed slightly from the route recommended by the book and signposted as the New River Path and decided to go along Quakers Walk, a traffic-free cut-through, protected by bollards at one end. I'm glad I departed from the official route, because otherwise I would have missed an unusual sight - a Victorian water tower that had been converted into a house: The Tower.

Well, the Tower (now renamed the Water Tower) is up for sale following the death of the husband and wife who lived there for fifty years. Which means that it's now possible to see photographs of the entire building (from the road it's partially obscured by a wall) and watch a virtual tour of the building.

By the time he gets to the roof, the estate agent giving the tour sounds a little out of breath. But walking up stairs is highly recommended by doctors, so from a health point of view, this would be a good move. According to the previous owners' daughter, her mother was still using the stairs in her nineties.

I've rooted out the early history of this tower and its first occupant, if anyone's interested - https://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/fancy-your-own-new-river-tower-with-large-garden-for-just-1m

The extraordinary tower dwelling on Bush Hill that I wrote about last summer is still for sale and this week was featured in the Evening Standard . Asking price is £1 million and if you're a lover of spiral staircases and 1970s interiors it will be just the thing.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
