Three years ago a young mother of two was slain in the street by a right wing extremist. In her maiden speech to Parliament Jo Cox MP had reminded all that we are far more united and have far have more in common than that which divides us. The Great Get Together was inspired by the memory of Jo Cox and is a rejection of divisive politics, words and actions; instead it is a time for communities to come together and celebrate all that unites us.
Old Park Road hosted one of several such Palmers Green celebrations this weekend with several hundred residents, family, friends and passers-by enjoying community, music, comedy, food, drink, sports and a Bollywood extravaganza, with several parties continuing indoors once the street was reopened to traffic at 8pm.
These events can be big or small but closing your own street for a party is straightforward, requiring no more than a few neighbours to form a team and gaining agreement from the Council. It’s an excellent way to get to know your neighbours, people who may well end up being called your friends. And that alone seems worth it.
