Broomfield Blues: House Red / The Blues Chapter

Sunday 13 August 2023 1.30pm - 5.30pm

Bandstand, Broomfield Park, Aldermans Hill N13 4PL

Broomfield Blues 2023: Update by St Harmonica's Blues Club

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Winkworth Palmers Green, the Southgate Club, Phil Davison and Ralph Hutchings these concerts are free to everyone. We’re keeping everything crossed that the weather will be kind to us every Sunday, but if it is apocalyptic we will relocate to the Southgate Club with the same line up. If the forecast is looking very wet, please watch out for updates on social media platforms on the Sunday morning.

The bar at Broomfield Blues will be provided by the Little Green Dragon. Food will be sold by either Annita Correia or Arthur O'Loan and the Friends of Broomfield Park will have a stall selling soft drinks and crafts.

For week 2 (13th August) the open mic sessions (starting at 1.30pm) will feature the Ed Jones, Big Alan Craig, and The Haunting AD.

The Friends of Broomfield Park and the St Harmonica's Blues Club bring you another 'best of blues'. Come along and eat, drink and listen to the music.

Entry each Sunday is free to all.

Palmers Green and Southgate play host to one of North London's top Blues clubs - St Harmonica's located at the Southgate Club N14 5EN. Together with our generous sponsors Winkworth, the Southgate Club, Ralph Hutchings and Phil Davison, St Harmonica's Blues Club along with the Friends of Broomfield Park are delighted to bring you another August full of the best in local, national and international Blues.

Broomfield Blues is our annual celebration and showcase of what can be found every Friday evening at St Harmonica's Blues Club, twice finalists in the UK Blues Awards 'Venue of the Year' category. Each Sunday afternoon during August come along to the park to eat, drink and listen to three hours of some of the best Blues music London has to offer.

We firmly believe that live music should be accessible and affordable and thanks to our sponsors we are able to maintain these as free events, open to all. If you like what you hear all we ask is that you acknowledge that with a voluntary donation into the collection "hat", either when it does the rounds or via the Control site. We've picked some excellent local hot food providers for your added enjoyment and a very fine bar to complete a perfect Sunday afternoon.

More details of everything can be found in this flyer, also kindly funded by our sponsors. Read, enjoy and come along to as many of the four concerts as you can. Unless the weather is absolutely shocking we will certainly be there each Sunday; and if the weather does let us down we will endeavour to relocate the music to the Southgate Club itself, home to St Harmonicas, a few minutes' walk, or bus ride away in Southgate just 50metres from Southgate Underground Station.

Each afternoon is preceded by a one hour "open mic" session at 1:30 offering a stage to up and coming as well as experienced performers. Do support them.

Week 1- Sunday 6th August - Chicago Blues

1:30 - 2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 - 3:30 THE ALAN GLEN & MANNY FIZZOTTI BLUES BAND

manny fizzottiTwo of our favourite players who are both regulars at St Harmonica's, Alan Glen is an absolute legend in the blues world. He has played and sung with the best, including the Yardbirds, and he brings his harmonica skills and vocals alongside Manny Fizzotti, a virtuoso guitarist and singer. Together they bring you classic blues the way it should be played. The perfect way to begin the 2023 series guaranteed to leave you wanting more!

3.45 - 5.30 DOC K'S BLUES BAND

doc ks blues bandThere are some who say that Doc K's Blues Band are the finest purveyors of Chicago Blues in the capital, they are certainly one of the longest running. Formed in 1966, Mad Dog Dave Barnes has been a constant presence in the band for 40 years. Dave has just about the finest voice in UK Blues, and plays a mean slide guitar too. He is joined up front by Chris Hargrave, vocals and harmonica. This is beginning to look like a farewell Malcolm tour as lead guitarist Malcolm Hine has announced his retirement from Doc K. He will be hard to replace especially as rumour has it that he cannot be harmed by conventional weapons. Authentic blues at its very best..

3:45 - 5:30 THE BLUES CHAPTER

Comprising Sky Wood on vocals, guitar and harmonica and with Jesse Thomas on sizzling, hot shot guitar and Jacob'Professor Redhair' Thomas on keys and piano you'll see shades of Gary Moore, SRV and Joe Bonamassa in their repertoire; a great festival band and a superb way to close the 2022 Broomfield Blues Series. Those who are about to rock...salute you!

Week 3 - Sunday 20th August - Blues with a smile

1:30 - 2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 - 3:30 THE CUSTOMTONES

customtonesMartin Fieber, the 'Sultan of Slide', is perhaps the UK's best kept slide secret. He brings his hugely talented band the Customtones, one of the finest and tightest units around, to Broomfield. Martin is not known as the Sultan of Slide for nothing, he makes all his own guitars under his Customtone label and the tone and the sound he achieves is staggering; some of his original material is equally wonderful. The rest of the band are all masters of their instruments with Mick Parker on drums, Terry Duggan on bass and Steve Taylor on keyboards. By the way, the sun always shines when the Customtones play!

3:45 - 5:30 THE BOOZE BROTHERS

booze brothersThey're on a mission from God, they play both kinds of music and they're wearing sun glasses. Steve Taylor again with a glittering array of international musicians, all based in Portugal, who bring their rhythm & blues review in the style of Jake & Ellwood, the Blues Brothers. Exciting, dynamic and authentic this band will put a huge smile on your faces and have Broomfield Park rocking; you will see the light.

Week 4 - Sunday 27th August - New York Blues

1:30 - 2:30 OPEN MIC SESSIONS

2:30 - 3:30 THE RIGHT REVEREND SWIFTY LeZARRE & THE SMOKERS

swifty lezarreHailing from New York City, the Right Reverend Swifty LeZarre is one of the most outrageous, amusing and popular players to appear at St Harmonica's Blues Club. Today he brings his band the Smokers to plug in and turn up the volume on his entertaining and original set. Some fine slide guitar playing too. Time to testify.

This year we have been fortunate that his tour dates coincide with the August Broomfield Blues series and so here he is.

3.45 - 5.30 HITMAN BLUES BAND

hitman blues bandThe Hitman from New York City and his Hitman Blues Band play original modern/alternative blues and inspired versions of blues classics = blues for the 21st century! The common thread for every tune is the blues - from soulful blues ballads to foot tappin' music to make you want to dance. Powerful vocals, ripping guitar, a solid rhythm section, adventurous horns and stirring backing vocals, plus a little humour in the narrative. This is a blues show like no other.
