The Casey Review of the Met, commissioned after the murder of Sarah Everard by a serving policeman, doesn't pull its punches. Dame Louise Casey calls for a complete overhaul of a "broken" organisation.
While she acknowledges the effects of the severe cuts to the Met during the Cameron governments, Louise Casey says that when implementing the cuts the leadership of the Met chose to "essentially throw women and children to the wolves".
The main criticisms are summarised by City AM as follows:
- The Met is “institutionally racist, misogynist and homophobic”
- There could be more Met officers like Wayne Couzens and David Carrick
- Predatory behaviour has “been allowed to flourish”
- Specialist child protection and sexual violence units are “overworked and inexperienced”
- The Met does not offer a “functioning neighbourhood police force”
- Two specialist units of the Met Police had “serious issues of culture and behaviour”
- The Met does not “root out bad officers” nor appropriately vet new recruits.
