He has won the award for supporting and engaging in life enrichment activities, as well as offering meaningful companionship for residents who truly appreciate it.

The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile for the benefit of the 12,000 residents living in Barchester’s 250 care homes and private hospitals across the country.

Beatrice Godfrey, general manager for Southgate Beaumont said: “This award celebrates individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence.  It takes a special kind of person and Mark is exactly that, he is an absolute gem and so valued by us all. Mark gives so much of his time to help others and we are so lucky to have him.”

Mark said: “I first got to know Southgate Beaumont when my aunt made it her home. The Beaumont management and care staff were exceptional and she had a very enjoyable time during her 4-year plus stay. Subsequently, due to this very positive experience I was keen to offer help and assistance with supporting activities and events on a voluntary basis. I have met so many wonderful people and really enjoy volunteering. I am so overwhelmed to have received this award!”

Zoe Grindley, Lifestyle Coordinator at Southgate Beaumont, said: “All the residents and team here absolutely adore Mark, he is such a godsend. We wish Mark the best of luck for the finals, although to us he is already a winner!”

Mark's volunteering is not confined to his activities at the Beaumont. He's been a important part of the volunteer team that has been looking after Broomfield Conservatory and its collection of exotic plants since it reopened in 2012.
