"Please give £10 a month to save our wildlife rescue centre!"
Four weeks ago Barry and June Smitherman put out an urgent appeal for donations to help cover the cost of feeding and caring for the animals looked after by the Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) at the Trent Park Animal Centre. With its cafe and animal centre closed because of the coronavirus lockdown, the charity's main source of income has disappeared.
The appeal was publicised on this and other local websites (see below) and in the May edition of Enfield Dispatch, and donations to date total around £7000, which should be enough to keep the centre open until some time in June. In addition, people have been signing up for regular monthly donations, but so far they only add up to around £300 per month, when the centre needs about £10,000 a month to survive.
What's more, Barry is getting phone calls from desperate people concerned with wildlife all over the country, from way up north to down in Cornwall, because other wildlife rescue centres are no longer answering their phones.
