inside north london samaritans officeNorth London Samaritans has launched an appeal for donations on the JustGiving website.

Like many other charities, North London Samaritans faces a huge funding deficit this year because of the suspension of fundraising events. The emotional support they provide to callers is even more important during the current crisis.

The branch provides emotional support 24 hours a day to people experiencing anxiety, distress, or suicidal feelings across the three large north London boroughs of Enfield Haringey and Barnet. As a branch it is entirely self-funding, receiving no money from the central organisation.

Before Coronavirus hit, the 100+ listening volunteers based in our North London branch were answering hundreds of calls for help each month. This could be someone you know, family or friends in urgent need but unable to talk to anyone in the middle of the night. It is more important than ever for Samaritans to be there 24/7, 365 days a year for those who need us.

Our helpline is feeling the pressure. Were likely to experience more people struggling to cope or in crisis. We may have less volunteers to help answer calls for help as a number of our volunteers will be self-isolating. Despite all of this, thanks to the dedication of our amazing volunteers, we are currently keeping 95% of our shifts open.

Everyone involved in providing our service is a volunteer, from our Director, to our Listening Volunteers, to our Support Volunteers. But our service still costs money to run and we face additional branch running costs related to keeping our branch clean and our volunteers safe.

Since the outbreak of Coronavirus, our usual fundraising activities have been stopped, and we face a huge funding shortfall for the year.

We want to continue to be there for all the people who need us. Please help us to do that by donating to our appeal. Thank you.
