The February meeting of Enfield Climate Action Forum (EnCAF) focussed on the links between injustice in the global trade system and continuing failure to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases. There were presentations from four people involved in the launch of a bid to make Enfield an official Fairtrade Community.

The Covid Community Campaign has been launched by Dame Louise Casey and London Councils, with the Mayor of London and leading national food poverty charities the Trussell Trust, FareShare, Magic Breakfast and Social Bite also lending their support. Enfield Council are consulting on 'Fairer Enfield', their proposed equality, diversity and inclusion policy. The draft policy sets out the council's duty to comply with relevant legislation and statutory requirements and confirms its commitment to tackle inequality and improve equality, diversity and inclusion in Enfield. Furthermore, it outlines the behaviours and values that everyone working for the council must demonstrate and the actions they must take in order to make this a reality.

During March and April North Enfield Food Bank provided more than 35,000 meals to vulnerable families across the borough, three times the amount in the same months in 2019. In the first week of May North Enfield Food Bank passed the milestone of 50,000 fed since opening in 2012 - a milestone that wouldn't have been possible without the continued support of the Enfield community and beyond.

Even before Covid-19, London had the highest poverty rates in the UK according to figures released today in London's Poverty Profile (LPP). The report shows how the increase of poverty in the private rented sector, the higher costs of living in the capital, and the rise of in-work poverty had left many Londoners struggling before the Covid-19 crisis.

The final report of the Enfield Poverty and Inequality Commission found that deprivation in the borough has increased in recent years and called on the government to review its funding arrangement for local authorities to help them tackle increasing poverty. The Commission made 27 recommendations which it says will make a significant difference to families with the lowest incomes in the borough. They include reforming the private rented sector, improving access to healthcare - including mental health services - revitalising youth services and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.
