Libraries transition gets under way

In response to cuts resulting from the government's austerity programme, Enfield Council has begun implementing its Libraries Strategy:  bringing in volunteer librarians in place of professional information specialists;  creating four "flagship" libraries while downsizing and leasing out the remainder as "community libraries";  and setting up a volunteer-run home delivery service to replace mobile libraries. Libraries development strategy will see 7-day opening in Palmers Green

Seven-day opening of Palmers Green Library is one of the innovations that will be introduced if Enfield Council agrees to a proposed Library Development Strategy for 2015 to 2018. The Strategy will be among the subjects to be discussed at this week's meeting of Enfield's Cabinet.  If agreed by the Cabinet, it will be presented to the full Council for its approval later this year. Palmers Green Library as it will look when it reopens later this year. Under the new strategy it will be open.......

Proposed "community libraries" could be transferred to the private sector

Enfield Council is to start looking for suitable partners to take over the majority of the borough's libraries.  These libraries would become "community libraries", offering a restricted range of library services, and would be co-located with other types of service provided by the chosen partners.  However, despite the use of "community" in the designation, a recent document suggests that chosen partners might include the commercial sector.. Library changes in prospect as part of cost-cutting measures

Enfield Council is consulting residents about proposals for a radical restructuring of its current library service. The changes are designed to reduce the costs of library services -  Enfield is having to contend with a cut of £80 million in the amount of funding it receives from central government - through greater concentration of resources, while at the same time providing library services across the borough and modernising the types of service that are available. PG Library closure - update on alternative arrangements

Enfield Library and Museum Service has provided updated information about arrangements during the closure of Palmers Green Library. The library will not reopen until autumn 2015.  In the meantime, opening hours have been extended at Winchmore Hill, Ridge Avenue and Southgate Circus libraries - click on the image to see the official notice.  In addition, a mobile library will be open in the Lodge Drive car park every Saturday from 9am to 5pm. PG Library closure: Changes to arrangements for extended hours at other libraries

Enfield Council's Library Service has modified the planned extended opening hours at neighbouring libraries which are designed to compensate for the year-long closure of Palmers Green Library from 26 July. There will now be extended hours only at Southgate Circus, Winchmore Hill and Ridge Avenue libraries and not at Bowes Road.  The extended hours will not start until 11 August.   Southgate Circus Winchmore Hill Ridge Avenue Monday 9am-8pm 9am-8pm 9am-8pm.......

With less than a fortnight to go before Palmers Green Library closes its doors until autumn 2015, the public will have a chance to find out what the Library will look like and what services will be available after its refurbishment. Palmers Green Library refurbishment - concern about reductions in bookshelf capacity

When Palmers Green Library reopens in the summer of 2015 after its refurbishment, it appears that bookshelf space will be considerably smaller than at present.  In fact, one regular user's conclusion from looking at the artist's impressions of the refurbished library is that it will no longer really be a library, just a room with some books: I have recently been in the PG Library and taken a quick look at the architect's illustrations of the refurbished premises. Planning permission granted for library refurbishment

On 4 March planning permission was granted for refurbishment of Palmers Green Library.  The official planning documentation can be found on the Council website, the most interesting documents being the Planning Statement and Design and Access Statement.
