Since 2010, when the size of fines for contravening parking, bus lane and moving traffic regulations was last reviewed, the number of penalty charges paid by drivers in London has increased by 50 per cent. London Councils, the London boroughs umbrella body that decides how much the penalties should be, suspects that the increasing disregard by drivers of the regulations has come about because penalties are no longer high enough to act as a sufficiently strong deterrent.
London Councils is therefore reviewing parking and traffic enforcement penalty charges and has launched a public consultation. The deadline for responding is 23rd October.
