Enfield Council is running a consultation about its proposals for changes to the layout of the public highway closure at Winchmore Hill Green that has been in force since July 2020 to make space for alfesco eating and drinking.
Brought in initially as part of the Covid Streetspace measures, the closure to traffic was made permanent this January. As the consultation document states, the effect has been to make this part of the Green a "thriving meeting place for residents and visitors to the borough while having the added benefit of improving pedestrian safety by removing this unnecessary cut through for drivers heading south on Station Road".
The council's proposals are designed to resolve a number of issues that have arisen with the current layout, including problematical parking by car drivers and delivery moped riders. The main changes would be:
- Providing designated parking bay for delivery mopeds;
- Relocating loading bay and providing additional bay with more pay and display parking;
- Ensuring access is maintained for emergency services;
- Reposition cycle parking racks to reduce indiscriminate parking on the carriageway;
- Removing the cast iron footway bollards to provide more footway space.
