This year our local civic society will be celebrating the 90th anniversary of the opening of London Underground's most architecturally outstanding station: Southgate. The station opened in March 1933, along with "Enfield West" (the original name of Oakwood Station). Four months later passengers were finally able to reach Cockfosters. This was the final stage of the Piccadilly Line's extension northwards from Finsbury Park: Manor House, Turnpike Lane, Wood Green, Bounds Green and Arnos Grove had all opened during the previous year.
To mark the anniversary, Southgate District Civic Voice (SDCV) will be inviting everyone to an open meeting at the Southgate Club on Saturday 14th January, where Heritage Managers Gareth Leslie and Edmund Bird from Transport for London will talk about the extension of the Piccadilly Line north of Arnos Grove, the architectural qualities of the stations, designed by Charles Holden, and the challenges of operating and maintaining them in the 21st century.
A ticket for the meeting will cost £5 for non-SDCV members (for members it will be free), but there will be a reduced annual membership price of £10 for anyone joining at the meeting.
