imageCampaigners have launched an online petition aimed at persuading Haringey Council to rethink their decision to sell the former Hornsey Town Hall to an overseas company who plan to convert it into a "boutique hotel" and build housing on part of the site.

imageThe 1930s building, situated in Crouch End, near the clocktower, is a Grade II* listed building,  but has been neglected and is on Historic England's At Risk Register.

The petition set out by the Hornsey Town Hall Appreciation Society calls on Haringey Council to "reconsider the decision to dispose of Hornsey Town Hall to a buyer who wants to turn it into a luxury boutique hotel in the face of overwhelming public disapproval".

The Society claim that an alternative scheme rejected by the Council, incorporating an Arts Centre, a small-business and creative incubator, and zero-carbon residential development, would have been completely in line with local opinion.

Things have moved on considerably since I wrote the article above. The Grade II listed town hall is now to be developed by Far East Consortium, who are proposing to restore the landmark and build an “apart-hotel” of 67 serviced apartments, 128 flats and four mews houses.

Not in line with local finances though, guessing the people supporting that aren't willing to throw thousands of pounds at it so their pie in the sky thinking is financially viable.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
