take the train one stop to Bowes Park, turn left at the top of the stairs, and you find yourself in Myddleton Road. A once thriving shopping street and community hub, neglected for many years and very shabby, only retaining some of its Victorian shopfronts, with many shops empty or used as illegal houses in multiple occupation - in some places resembling a ghost street. But despite this it's a special street, heart of a conservation area, and it's slowly coming back to life, thanks to a few enterprising restaurateurs and shopkeepers - chief among them the Step cafe and bar and Mum's Bistro - and to the We Love Myddleton Road campaign, which is battling against the greed and indifference of property owners and already having a positive effect on the street..
This Saturday We Love Myddleton Road is organising a "cash mob", who will gather in the street at 11am and spend their money in some of the shops or cafes in the street. As well as the Step and Mum's, there's a new Italian delicatessen and Greek food store which are both attracting good reviews.
The Bowes Park community would welcome support from those of us who live the other side of the North Circ, so why not go along and help them fight for their street (and buy some nice food and drink at the same time)?
