bridge across new river at hazelwood recreation ground

Local residents are concerned that a new footbridge across the New River poses a risk to children, who might fall into deep water through large gaps in the fencing on either side.

The wooden footbridge was opened on 8th March, replacing an old metal bridge linking the eastern end of Park Avenue to Hazelwood Recreation Ground.

One of the first people to walk across the reopened bridge was Pamela Ramtohul, who set up the Park Avenue and New River Crescent Neighbourhood Watch and administers its Facebook page.  She explains that the danger was pointed out to her by a cyclist who's a regular visitor to Hazelwood Rec.  He thought that the water at this point is about 5' 4" deep.  He suggests that the bridge should be made safe by attaching latticed wiring to the lower half of the bridge.

Another visitor to the Facebook page said that "little kids love to lean over to feed the ducks" so could fall through the space between the horizontal bars.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
