Seven days of civic events at locations throughout the former Southgate Urban District began with the announcement of the winning entries in a photographic competition run by Southgate Photographic Society.

The competition's theme this year was "50 Years of Conservation".  Fittingly, the launch event was held in the heart of the Southgate Circus Conservation Area, at 6 Station Parade, one of the shops included in the Grade II* listed complex comprising Southgate underground station together with the adjacent bus station and shops.  Again fittingly, first prize was awarded to a stunning shot of the underground station by night taken by Christine Matthews.

More than 150 photographs were submitted by members of Southgate Photographic Society. They were taken within the ten designated conservation areas in Southgate and are on display all week at 8 Station Parade.

The competition's objective was to make a record at 50 years of the flora, fauna, people and the built environment within conservation areas in Southgate.

Southgate Station and the surrounding shops are listed grade II* by Historic England.  They were designed by Charles Holden in the Style Moderne/Art Deco style, opening in 1933

The vacant shop at No 6 Station Parade will serve as headquarters for the Civic Week and has been let at a peppercorn rent by London Underground Ltd.  It will be open throughout the week, when it will be used to display the winning photographs and provide an information resource facility for local groups to promote their activities and membership. The aim being to play a part in strengthening partnerships in Southgate by reinforcing a stronger sense of community and to foster a better environment for the future.

Also at the opening ceremony were representatives of some of the civic societies, clubs and associations that are hosting events during Civic Week, including:

  • Southgate District CivicTrust
  • Southgate Photographic Society
  • Southgate Green Association
  • Enfield Choral Society
  • The Walker Cricket Ground Trust
  • Friends of The Minchenden Oak Garden
  • Jay Walks
  • The Enfield Society

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
