Jazz musicians with an international pedigree will be playing in the smart new community room at the Fox during June and July - at affordable entry prices.
The fortnightly Jazz Mondays @ the Fox launch on 5th June, when the guest musician will be award-winning trumpeter Byron Wallen. Subsequent gigs will feature globe-trotting Improvising vocalist Anita Wardell, internationally acclaimed saxophonist and composer Julian Siegel, and saxophonist Dave O'Higgins, of whom the Observer's jazz critic says "his fund of ideas never runs out".
The common element at each gig will be Kaiyo, a contemporary jazz trio comprising Amy Baldwin (bass), Simon Purcell (piano) and Jon Scott (drums), all three with highly distinguished careers in Jazz.
Simon Purcell, who moved to the Southgate/Palmers Green area 18 months ago, explains that Kaiyo is the Japanese word for ocean. Like the ocean, Kaiyo's music is constantly reforming and is defined by waves, currents, tides and flow. While Kaiyo will be playing some of Simon's own compositions, audiences at the Fox will recognise many familiar "standards" that the band include in their repertoire.
Central to the vision behind Jazz Mondays @ the Fox is the idea of accessible community jazz - within walking distance of home and affordable (in fact, the entry charge will be an optional donation).
