OPEN CALL for an artist to create a site-specific work to celebrate a renowned local poet in Palmers Green, North London
Palmers Green Action Team is a group of local volunteers who are dedicated to making the high street thrive and returning it to the heart of the community. We have been awarded a grant as part of Enfield Council’s ‘Stories of Enfield’ project to celebrate the life and work of local poet Stevie Smith.
We are looking for an artist to create a text-based, site-specific artwork in celebration of the renowned poet Stevie Smith, who grew up and lived in 1 Avondale Road in Palmers Green from 1906 up to her death in 1971.
We are seeking proposals that celebrate Stevie Smith’s poetry and potentially also her illustrations into one or multiple imaginative artworks to be encountered by local residents and visitors in Palmers Green high street. We expect the artist to select the poem or poems they wish to work with. Smith’s poetry is concerned with suffering and mortality. Filled with a dark humour, her work explores the suburbia and what lurks behind appearances. Artists' proposals should consider Stevie Smith’s character and the nature of her poetry, which will be reflected in the artwork concept, designs, choice of site and materials.
